search main menu skip to primary content skip to secondary content home blog top dog what pat flynn, internet business mastery, the fizzle show, and entrepreneur on fire are doing right and how they can improve posted on february 13, 2014 by [email protected] all four of these businesses have regular podcasts wherein they tell listeners what they have learned about doing business and how the listener can implement these lessons into their own businesses and lives. each of these shows has its own regular format that listeners are used to, and judging by the popularity of these programs, listeners enjoy the formats. listeners, as we further know, like getting to know the hosts of the shows. odd sorts of “friendships” get started and grow from listening. the fizzle show ’s basic format is to have the hosts – chase, corbett, and caleb – all talk, while chase frames the discussion in an introduction and a closing. between the opening and closing, the three guys talk about the business and mixed in the biz talk is some joking and personal anecdotes. listeners get to know them from their interactions as they relate to the topic. internet business mastery , featuring jeremy and jason, also has an opening and a closing, with the biz talk in the middle. they have recently changed formats where they have cut the small talk that they used to do for about 10 minutes in order to shorten the show and get straight to the meat. pat flynn, of smart passive income and, recently, ask pat , has an opening and a closing, with the main content in the middle, like the others. sometimes he interviews, and sometimes he just talks about the latest business tool or idea he’s working on. given that he runs a one-man show, he’s unique in that there is rarely any back-and-forth; what we learn of pat comes when he explains his business in terms of his life. entrepreneur on fire is a daily podcast (rare in the industry) with an opening, a closing, and a strictly scripted question session with a new interviewee each day. other than shows aimed back at himself, listeners never get to know the host, john lee dumas, through the podcast. all of these podcasts keep to the format most of the time. one time that they all break format (and this is not unique to these shows) is for q&a sessions. most q&a shows load up on maybe 5 questions, and try to get to the point with a helpful response. the fizzle show sometimes throws in a q&a of a question or two at the end of their regular podcasts, as have other podcasts done this. entrepreneur on fire has rapid-fire q&a shows every few months, where john lee dumas seems to read and answer as many questions as possible in a half hour. in this case i hear about things that i never knew i needed to hear about, which is great. but the answers use industry lingo or abbreviations, and they lack really helpful tips like where to find the product or service they’re discussing, comparing and contrasting product or service providers, or just any info deeper than can be mined in 15 seconds. if you listen to these shows because you like the format, then when they break format for a q&a or to interview themselves, you might be disappointed. if the q&a has 20 questions, only 3 of which pertain to you, then you need to save the entire show, costing valuable space on your hard drive or ipod. if the q&a brought up a question, but failed to adequately answer it, then you need to save the show anyway for something that you only barely need. and if the show is loaded with questions (or if the show is not a q&a show, but added them in anyway) you need to save the entire show and search through it when the time comes that you need the info. (a great solution, of course, is to take notes while listening, but many of us listen while walking, driving, or doing other things where note taking is a hassle. evernote evangelists can probably teach us all a thing or two here.) plus, other than entrepreneur on fire , none of these shows are on often enough. entrepreneur on fire is on daily, but, for many people, 40 minutes per day is too much. once every week or two, however, is too little. pat flynn has remedied this perfectly. he has ported his q&a sessions to a completely different podcast, ask pat , so that his regular format is never interrupted. it also gives him an excuse to show up daily, and it gives just the right amount of time to thoroughly answer each question. since there is only one question per podcast, it is short enough to listen to daily without becoming a burden—especially if you get behind and the shows stack up in your itunes. ask pat is short enough to save for reference without taking up too much valuable space, and it is easy to reference when you need the info. perfect solution! as for internet business mastery , i like that they have slimmed down the show, but they’ve done it at the expense of their personalities and their human connection to the listeners. the issue was they lumped their personality into a segment of its own instead of mixing it in the business talk, where it should have been. the fizzle show guys know well how to mix the two. it’s no secret that sometimes they have lost the course for longer than some would like, but overall they mix business and pleasure and no one is shaken or stirred. it’s just right. conclusion: internet business mastery could benefit from taking a page out of the fizzle show ’s playbook and add their personalities back in, but do it within the show. their specialty is the “soft sell” which works best when the soft seller is a trusted friend or business partner. don’t sacrifice friendship for brevity. entrepreneur on fire would do well to slow the roll with the rapid-fire q&a sessions, and instead of being all hyper and in a hurry to get through the show (i know you have a tight schedule, john, but are you podcasting for the audience, or for your paycheck?), slow down and be more thorough. the fizzle show might make some listeners happy by keeping more to the topic, but, overall i enjoy it so long as we always get the topic discussed completely. you make me laugh. in fact, i don’t just call the last day of the workweek ‘friday’ anymore. now it’s “fizzle friday!” and that’s as it should be. pat flynn is just crushing it. the three shows that are not pat flynn’s would make me happy if they all had short daily q&a sessions, limited to a single question per podcast. keep the q&a podcast under 15 minutes (5-10 minutes would be ideal), and if there is more than one person on your regular show, then have more than one person on your q&a show. we like you as we know you. keep it that way. keep yourselves in our earholes as often as possible by offering helpful content daily. we will thank you with positive comments, downloads, and dollars posted in uncategorized is it worth a dollar? posted on november 27, 2013 by [email protected] is it worth a dollar? if it’s not worth a dollar, then it’s worthless. if it is worth a dollar, then it’s worth more than a dollar. a dollar represents the level of value where someone is willing to take the steps to make a purchase, where what the seller offers is worth more than the price asked for it. a dollar represents a person’s time and attention. it is tied to a level of emotion. it is a level of emotional decision-making. if something is worth less than a dollar then the seller and their offer are ignored. or, if they cannot be ignored, folks quickly fumble for some coins to toss the seller’s way so they can get back to what they were doing before they got interrupted. at a dollar, people start taking out their wallets and opening their purses. people make the efforts to see if they have any cash. they take the time to pull out their plastic. and once they have made the decision to buy, price becomes secondary. because no one chooses to buy anything unless they feel like they are getting the better bargain. no one offers to
